Dear SFHS Falcon Families,
The start of the 2nd semester offers our students a valuable opportunity to set new academic goals, embrace new challenges, and approach the remainder of the school year with renewed enthusiasm. Our dedicated teaching staff is committed to helping each student achieve their full potential.
To improve both the student and parent experience, we are trying several new initiatives this year. We are hosting a Winter Carnival event the week of February 2nd, starting with an amazingly exciting event on Wednesday, February 4th. Our FBLA organization is organizing and hosting a dodgeball tournament for staff and students to build school spirit. On Friday, February 6th, we will hold an all-school pep assembly to acknowledge and honor our students involved in winter activities. Following the assembly, we will host various games and activities for our students, including yard and board games, popcorn and movie nights, and cookie decorating.
On Thursday, February 12th, we are hosting a student showcase event coupled with our 2nd semester Parent / Teacher conferences. This new-look event will feature meals provided by our cafeteria staff and babysitting by our NHS and Key Club students. The evening will include exhibits of student achievement from the past semester, along with opportunities for teachers to meet with you to discuss your child. More information regarding this will be sent out soon.
Further, Sheboygan Falls High School is proud to announce the launch of MasteryPrep, a premier ACT preparation solution designed to ensure that every student is college- and career-ready. As institutions like UW-Madison return to requiring ACT scores and U.S. Service Academies maintain strict score mandates, a competitive result is essential for admissions and securing high-value scholarships, such as the Sheboygan County Scholars program. Our students will utilize MasteryPrep through ClassLink during ACP periods, starting with diagnostic tests to build personalized study plans. To encourage high engagement, we are offering incentives including food rewards and exam exemptions. Whether your student is bound for a 4-year university, a technical trade, or the military, this initiative provides the tools necessary to unlock future opportunities and strengthen our overall School Report Card.

The Creative Writing class celebrated the publication of their anthology Fledglings at a book release party at Sip and Story in downtown Falls. |
In December, 5 SFHS alumni came to visit our Spanish 5 class. All alumni attend different universities or are in the military. They shared their experiences with transitioning from SFHS to their specific path and answered questions. |

Students from Spanish NHS organized sales for the Pulsera Project. As a district we made $450! The Pulsera Project helps to sustain jobs for more than 200 Central American artists. The proceeds from the pulsera sale will support educational programs, scholarships, workers' rights, community development, housing, and a wide range of other projects that empower artists, their families, and their communities. |
Winter athletics shine at SFHS, highlighted by strong performances across programs and the dance team advancing to state, qualifying two routines on the biggest stage. |

A Message from Nurse Timler and Dr. Brault |
Flu activity is surging this season, in some cases reaching record highs, according to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. Even when respiratory illness levels are low, it is important to keep up with prevention strategies. Follow these tips to help keep you and your loved ones healthy: |
- Stay up-to-date with vaccines.
- Wash your hands and practice good hygiene.
- Take steps for cleaner air, such as gathering outside, opening windows or doors, or using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) cleaner.
- Cover coughs and sneezes.
- Stay home if you are sick.
|
Important updates from our Medical Director, Dr. Brault: FLU BY THE NUMBERS |
-
The CDC has classified this season as moderately severe, noting an estimated 11 million illnesses, about 120,000 hospitalizations, and ~5,000 deaths so far. This is a substantial increase compared to the same point last year.
-
High or very high flu activity is now widespread across the U.S., with tens of states reporting elevated levels.
- Pediatric flu deaths have also increased in some areas, with reports of child fatalities in cities like Boston.
|
How It Compares to Last Season |
-
Compared with 2024–25, this season’s illness count and hospitalizations are roughly twice as high at this point in the season — for example, about 11 million illnesses now vs. ~5.3 million by late December last year.
- Hospitalizations and outpatient visits for respiratory illness have climbed sharply too.
|
Why This Season Seems “Worse” |
-
A new H3N2 subclade K strain appears to be dominant and spreading quickly, which may be contributing to more cases.
- Many states are seeing very high levels of flu-like activity, which isn’t typical this early.
-
Factors like holiday travel and lower vaccination rates are being cited by experts as contributors to the higher case counts.
|
Bottom Line
This flu season is more intense than what we typically expect at this point in winter and notably worse than last year by several key measures, even though health authorities aren’t calling it an extreme emergency--YET. The strong spread and rising hospitalizations make vaccination and prevention especially important this season. There is still time to get your flu shot! Our experience this year has been that those who have gotten their flu shots have either avoided illness altogether or have had milder illness than those without.
Stay healthy! Dr. Brault & Deanna Timler, RN, BSN |
