Hello Middle School Families,
We have officially reached the halfway point of the school year. With grades released earlier this week, please take a moment to log in to Infinite Campus to review your child's academic progress. As we move into the 2nd semester, we encourage you to continue having conversations with your child about their daily school experiences. For each child to continue growing, it takes students, staff, and guardians working together toward the common goal of continuous improvement. The Middle School is also excited to announce that we will be hosting our Showcase Night on Thursday, March 5th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. Please mark your calendars to get a firsthand look at the wonderful things happening here on a daily basis! Thank you for your support and partnership. The School District of Sheboygan Falls will hold its next monthly regular board meeting on Monday, February 16th at 6:00 pm. Please join us! In January, the Middle School performed a medical hold drill. The students continued their learning in the classroom, while the safety team came together to practice a specific situation. |
The inter-district public school Open Enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend public school in a school district other than the one in which they reside or to remain in their current district in the event that they move out of the district before the start of the 2026-27 school year (Moving? See HERE for more information on remaining in the District through the school year). Open Enrollment will allow student(s) to continue attending school in the School District of Sheboygan Falls. Please call Lisa Berg at 920-467-7893 for additional information or check the Department of Public Instruction Website at: https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment (also check the 2026-27 Open Enrollment Regular Application Period Brochure).
There is no tuition cost for students participating in the Open Enrollment program, but parents are responsible for transporting their student(s) to and from school. The open enrollment period for the 2026-27 school year is from February 2nd until 4:00 p.m. on April 30th, 2026.
Applications must be done on the DPI (Department of Public Instruction) website at https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment. A link to this site will also be available on the school web site during the application period at: www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us. The DPI website will be active from February 2nd until 4:00 p.m. on April 30th, 2026.
If you anticipate a possible move out of the School District of Sheboygan Falls, please complete the Open Enrollment application as soon as possible. You have the right to cancel your application at any time and are not bound to enrollment. If you are currently attending under a Tuition Waiver, you will need to complete an Open Enrollment application for the upcoming school year. |

A Message from Nurse Timler and Dr. Brault |
Flu activity is surging this season, in some cases reaching record highs, according to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. Even when respiratory illness levels are low, it is important to keep up with prevention strategies. Follow these tips to help keep you and your loved ones healthy: |
- Stay up-to-date with vaccines.
- Wash your hands and practice good hygiene.
- Take steps for cleaner air, such as gathering outside, opening windows or doors, or using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) cleaner.
- Cover coughs and sneezes.
- Stay home if you are sick.

The CDC has classified this season as moderately severe, noting an estimated 11 million illnesses, about 120,000 hospitalizations, and ~5,000 deaths so far. This is a substantial increase compared to the same point last year.

High or very high flu activity is now widespread across the U.S., with tens of states reporting elevated levels.
- Pediatric flu deaths have also increased in some areas, with reports of child fatalities in cities like Boston.

How It Compares to Last Season |

Compared with 2024–25, this season’s illness count and hospitalizations are roughly twice as high at this point in the season — for example, about 11 million illnesses now vs. ~5.3 million by late December last year.
- Hospitalizations and outpatient visits for respiratory illness have climbed sharply too.

Why This Season Seems “Worse” |

A new H3N2 subclade K strain appears to be dominant and spreading quickly, which may be contributing to more cases.
- Many states are seeing very high levels of flu-like activity, which isn’t typical this early.

Factors like holiday travel and lower vaccination rates are being cited by experts as contributors to the higher case counts.

Bottom Line
This flu season is more intense than what we typically expect at this point in winter and notably worse than last year by several key measures, even though health authorities aren’t calling it an extreme emergency--YET. The strong spread and rising hospitalizations make vaccination and prevention especially important this season. There is still time to get your flu shot! Our experience this year has been that those who have gotten their flu shots have either avoided illness altogether or have had milder illness than those without.
