A Message from the Principals |

|
Hello Middle School Families,
As the weather (hopefully) turns a corner—bringing green grass and blooming flowers—it is natural for students to begin looking toward summer break. However, some of our most significant growth occurs during these final weeks of the year. We often remind our students that the school year is a marathon, not a sprint. We have successfully navigated the first 20 miles; now is the time to find that "second wind" and finish the year strong!
I want to extend a quick thank you for your incredible support during our state testing season. We are proud of the teaching and learning that occurs here daily and are eager to receive the results this summer. This data will help us continue to move forward and raise the academic bar for all our students.
Additionally, thank you to those who completed the family survey last month. We truly appreciate the perspectives shared and will be utilizing this data, as a staff, to better support our students and families. We are currently seeking a parent focus group to meet next month to review the results and provide deeper insight. If you would like to be a part of this conversation, please email Mr. Zak at rzak@sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us.

As always if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your ongoing partnership in education.
Sincerely,
Ryan & Lindsey
Ryan Zak, SFMS Principal
Lindsey Schreurs, SFMS Associate Principal

Allergy Season in Wisconsin
|
Spring has arrived, which means allergy season in Wisconsin isn't far behind. This year will be particularly tough for people with seasonal allergies as climate change continues to drive longer and more intense pollen seasons, according to a recent report by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
An increasingly earlier spring and later fall allow pollen-producing trees and plants to be active longer, and warming temperatures in urban areas are increasing air pollution and further stimulating pollen production, the report said.
Due to overlapping symptoms, it can be hard to tell the difference between a cold and allergies. Allergy symptoms occur when your body reacts to a foreign allergen protein, such as grass, mold, or pollen. When an allergen is present, your body's defense system kicks in, causing your immune system to react to protect you.
Colds are caused by your body's response to a virus. In this case, your immune system responds by causing physical symptoms, like inflammation. The response occurs as it attempts to eliminate the virus and heal your body.
The chart below outlines the difference between common cold and allergy symptoms:
|
Here are some tips that can help you prepare for allergy season, and allow you to get outside and enjoy the spring weather: |
-
Check pollen counts. Make sure to check pollen counts daily during peak allergy season and stay inside on high-pollen days if possible.
-
Keep pollen out of your home. You can keep pollen out of your home by taking shoes off before entering the house, putting pollen-laden clothes in the washing machine immediately and closing the windows on high-pollen days, and cleaning your bedding, fabric furniture, and floors weekly and your curtains and washable rugs monthly will also help.
-
Use high-efficiency filters. If possible, use central air conditioning or air cleaners with a HEPA, or high efficiency filter.
-
Treat your symptoms early. Allergy medications often work best if you start taking them before pollen levels surge. Speak to your doctor about when to start treatment.
